Global climate change poses considerable challenges for fruit growing. Extended vegetation periods and higher temperatures can allow the cultivation of heat-loving species with longer ripening times. However, drought, heavy rain and late frost events have a negative impact on the growth, yield and quality of fruit crops. Rising temperatures in all seasons lead to increasing pest pressure and the spread of new plant diseases. Long-standing and high-yield fruit-growing areas are also very regionally limited. By means of suitable adaptation measures to climate change, it is important to minimize the risks (e.g. lack of water) for fruit growing and to make optimal use of the opportunities (e.g. extended vegetation period). The goal of FruitAdapt is the development of innovative technologies for optimal adaptation of fruit growing to the advancing climate change. These should help to keep fruit growing competitive.
